Dotted Rhythms
Rather than divide a particular duration into two halves
the dot can be used to divide a duration into three quarters and one quarter :

Notice that in the second and third measures above, the rhythm is
identical. One dotted quarter note is equivalent in duration to one quarter note tied to one eighth note. | |||||
